I’m glad this is finally getting attention. Most states consider it a crises with only a few hundred people waiting indefinitely. In Texas they have 2500 people waiting for a bed, usually longer than the maximum sentence of the charge they’re accused of, without ever being convicted, and only 1500 beds (all currently occupied statewide) “available.”
Those referred for treatment in order to stand trial can wait behind bars longer than the sentence for the crime they’re charged with
