Read the definition of Democrat – “a political affiliation with strong roots in Democracy.” There was a reason it took a Republican President to wage civil war in order to end slavery – democracy, majority rules. Most Americans didn’t have the will to end slavery even if they were morally opposed to it. This is the very reason majority rules doesn’t always work.
Republicanism is founded in the belief that sometimes the morality of the few supersedes the will of the majority. If Democrats had their way slavery would have taken another 100 years to end on its own. Other unpopular ideas – like killing a baby the day before it’s due to be born should be illegal (for the life of me I don’t understand why that one is hard to agree on, but in my older age I’ve learned to pick my battles) rely on Democratically elected Republicans for legislative action. Republicanism accepts that the will of the people can be deferred to one representative who has the right to vote his conscience- whether his or her constituents agree.
The Revolutionary War was another unpopular act of government. Conservatives had to once again act in the people’s best interest when they were afraid to go to war with England – without conservatives we wouldn’t have a country. Unfortunately the conservative right took it upon themselves to be the conscience of the planet and act as world police. Democrats used to vote with the majority against war – communism ended that. The military industrial complex kept politicians rich and in power, war pays whether the people support it or not.
Now, somehow Democrats and Republicans have both convinced their constituents war is necessary in so many situations that don’t concern American interests, it’s hard to believe Americans fall for it. But if you can sell critical race theory to Democrats you can sell just about anything.
